Cathedral of Saint Paul
Just moments from our St. Paul, MN hotel, the Cathedral of Saint Paul, a famous Twin Cities historic landmark, stands as a symbol of this great capital city.
The St. Paul Cathedral is an example of classical Renaissance architecture boasting exterior walls made of Saint Cloud granite and seating a congregation of 3,000. Three magnificent stained glass windows created by artist Charles Connick add impressive touches to the already breathtaking structure.
The original church started as a crude log cabin overlooking the Mississippi River where the congregation quickly outgrew its small space. After evolving through two more churches, the fourth and final Cathedral of St. Paul was begun in 1906 and designed by architect Emmanuel Louis Masquery.
The cornerstone was laid on June 2, 1907 with the first Mass being held on Palm Sunday, March 28, 1915. It was consecrated by Archbishop William O’Brady on October 14, 1958 and placed on the National Register of Historical Buildings in 1974.
